Poor performance costs Britain £32 million each year

1st August 2006

Companies in Britain are wasting as much as £32 million every year as a result of staff under-performing, new research shows. A study by Personnel Today reveals that 96 per cent of employers quizzed admitted to having problems with performance levels, with almost a third (29 per cent) claiming that it was a major problem for their business.

In the survey of over 8000 people working in HR, it was also discovered that two thirds of HR professionals blamed line managers for poor performance, claiming that they needed to know how to "get the best out of staff".

Many respondents admitted that the preferred method of dealing with poorly performing staff was to 'manage them out', particularly in the IT, health and education sectors.

The Tough Love report estimates that tolerating poor performance costs UK businesses £32 million a year, based on an average staff of 9,000 and an average wage of £22,000, with the worst performing employees in the public sector.
