UK managers lose 19 million unused days of annual leave each year because they are unable to tear themselves away from work, new research claims. According to People Management online, the magazine from the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development.
More than 60 per cent do not use their full entitlement of leave each year, which represents £3.5 billion of unpaid work for their employers, according to a survey of 550 managers by the Chartered Management Institute (CMI).
More than 30 per cent blame a heavy workload, 25 per cent worry that deadlines will not be met if they stop working and 17 per cent find it hard to "let go" of their responsibilities.
When they do take a holiday, 25 per cent check their work emails and voicemails and 13 per cent phone the office regularly to check all is well.
Nearly 80 per cent would take a lower holiday allowance if they could have higher pay or benefits like flexible working or a gym membership instead.
"The idea of 'all work and no play' is not a recipe for long-term success," said Jo Causon, CMI director of marketing and corporate affairs.
"Britain continues to operate a long-hours culture. Companies need to sit up and address this because rigid policies may produce a culture of presenteism but do not guarantee high levels of performance."
"This is a symptom of the pressure and stress that managers feel they are under in today’s busy workplace" adds Mike Allardyce, Director of Partnered Solutions.
"Time is precious and often it is a high workload which forces this decision. Alongside this, there is a worrying trend that it is a sign of a good manager that he or she doesn’t use their holiday allowance."
"Often effective business strategy and coaching will help both the manager and their employer to help identify how to get the best out of themselves. A rested manager is more effective than a tired stressed one."
